Just got my Kay mandolin back from the shop and decided to record the Prelude from the Bach Cello Suites. It’s amazing how musical Bach made this continuous stream of 16th notes.  What a jerk.  It’s transposed for Violin into the key of D instead of the original key of G.

“Elvis Presley Blues” by Gillian Welch.  Recorded this one last year on a reel to reel, just getting around to converting it.  Some jangly guitar, out of tune vocals.  Success!

My friends Albert and Núria shot this video of me singing Bob Dylan at the Manhattan with the Half Dozen Brass Band.  It’s a little hard to hear, but it definitely captures what it felt like in the packed Manhattan that night with everybody singing along. (Check out Albert’s blog, it’s in catalan but google translator will do the trick.  http://blogs.descobrir.cat/fullsdecamp/)

Ok, so I just finished recording all these tracks for my remake of Graceland.  This tune is the essential Paul Simon.  The bassline on the track is so good, it really makes the song. And Paul’s singing…dang.  What to do next?

One thing I’ve started doing to increase my production (and music) knowledge is to re-record every part of some epic track I love.  The first of this series is “Penny Lane” by the Beatles.  I played all the parts with a midi keyboard in Kontakt and Live except for the vocals(why did I pick such an easy song?!).  On technology from 20 years ago, this would have sounded like crap,  but with today’s techmology it sounds half way decent.  This has been really really really fun to do. Next up, check back for Graceland…

I’ve always loved “When will the blues leave?”  by Ornette Coleman, so I learned it on Alto Sax today and made a recording.  Played some organ and second line on the drums to fill it out a little. Enjoy!
